A mixed media collage, based on the formation of a roundel of trees.
This ring, or roundel, was planted, possibly as a beech hedge in the mid/late 19th century to enclose an area of a common on the edge of Dartmoor and used for grazing. In time a few trees were allowed to grow without being cut back, possibly the stronger of the saplings ‘survived’ and matured, cutting out the shade to weaker plants. Over time the trees grew and were shaped by their proximity to one another. They stand in a circle appearing to watch over each other. Since I started drawing and painting them 8 years ago the grouping has changed. Two of the trees have gone and one small ash has defied the odds and has survived. Each time I return I am surprised it is still standing.
This mixed media collage is sold in an oak frame ready to hang. Framed size is 68cm × 68cm. This artwork is signed on both the front and back - and is dated on the back.
